Does a caregiver need a study permit to enroll in a Canadian institution?

Hello Ma’am Gerardine,

Good day. I want to ask if I still need a student permit to study for Personal Support Worker? I’m currently a caregiver for an elderly.  My work permit expires in 2019.

Thanks!

Ligaya A.

Hi Ligaya,

Thank you for reaching out to us. You don’t need to get a study permit from IRCC if your PSW program is 6 months of less. Make sure that you don’t exceed 6 months even if your program includes internship. You will note that your work permit has conditions that state:

“Unless authorized, prohibited from attending any educational institution and taking any academic, professional or vocational training course.”

When is a study permit required?

If the program doesn’t exceed 6 months you may formally inform the IRCC of your intention to study as a matter of courtesy.

Conditions written directly on your work permit include: type of work you can do, employer you can work for, where you can work and how long you can work.  Regulation 185 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations outlines all the conditions on the work permit.

Although not specifically stated conditions in your work permit, you must not work for an employer in a business where there are reasonable grounds to suspect a risk of sexual exploitation – such as strip clubs, massage parlours and escort agencies.

Best Regards,

Gerardine Alcalde
