Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship

Dear Consultant,

For two years now, I have been unlucky in getting an invitation to apply for the sponsorship of my parents.  I am a registered nurse here in B.C. working in a hospital and a nursing home. I have enough income to cover the income requirement to sponsor both my parents.  However, my numbers have never been selected in the last two draws.

I have heard that Immigration Canada is scrapping the lottery system for parents and grandparent sponsorship?  Is this true? How do I apply then? Shall I just submit the application anytime now?

                                                Grace of Vancouver, B.C.

Dear Grace,

On August 20, 2018, Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen announced changes in the Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship Program due to the many complaints he received from the public regarding the lottery system.  Many claimed it to be unfair.

The changes will take effect next year.  Therefore, you cannot yet submit your sponsorship application this year unless you received an invitation to apply from IRCC.

As reported:

“Starting in 2019, potential sponsors will indicate their willingness to sponsor a parent or grandparent by filling out an ‘interest to sponsor’ form online. Instead of randomly selecting people from this list for sponsorship, as is the current policy, applications will instead be invited based on the order in which the ‘interest to sponsor’ forms are received until the 20,000 cap is reached.”

I think this is more fair than the current policy.

We will be posting in our blog as soon as the ‘interest to sponsor’ form becomes available online. Best of luck to you and all others planning to sponsor their parents or grandparents.

Sincerely,
