George Brown College in Toronto recently gave its stamp of approval to Access Pro Immigration Services as its Education Agent for international students in the Philippines.
Built into Toronto’s foundation, GBC has been evolving with the city in the last 50 years. GBC , a community college and recognized as a Designated Learning Centre, celebrated its 50th year in 2017.
“With GBC we are confident our international students won’t have issues with getting post graduate work permits after completing their programs,” Registered Canadian Immigration Consultant Gerardine Alcalde says.
DID YOU KNOW? As an international student you are allowed to work 20 hours/week during the regular academic session and full time during scheduled breaks? If you’re married and come to Canada as an international student you may bring your spouse who will automatically get an open work permit.

Alcalde advises post-secondary international students who intend to work and live in the country as Permanent Residents to ensure that they are enrolled in a college recognized as a Designated Learning Institution.

Under paragraph 216 (e) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations, study permits are only issued to applicants who have been accepted at educational institutions designated by provinces and territories to host international students. Furthermore, DLIs are also defined as “learning institutions that are administered by a federal department or agency.”
When enrolling in a private college students should ensure that these institutions meet provincial education requirements and are in the DLI list. There have been cases of private colleges losing their designation which becomes an issue for the international student.

GBC: building seamless bridge between students and employment
George Brown College programs are informed by industry which results to job-ready graduates.
“GBC’s long list of industry partners is impressive. These partners allow GBC students to have workplace experience through the coop and internship programs. GBC graduates are equipped with job skills that go beyond the learning experience in the classroom,” Alcalde said.
She also added that being a community college administered by a federal agency GBC will never lose its DLI status. This is an enormous assurance for international students who want to pursue permanent residency in Canada.
